Totally-transport.co.uk 'Giving Credit Where Its Due Promise'

From the 1st of January 2012 here at Totally-transport we’ll be turning over a new leaf, and making sure that from now on, we always give credit where it’s due.

This means that any images which are not our own will have a little bit in brackets telling you about who took the photo or who it belongs to, in the same way all new articles and news items published after the 1st of January will have a ‘sources’ section at the bottom, to let you know where we got our story or our facts from. We’re looking to make our website clearer and more transparent. Previously published articles will not be updated to the new ‘giving credit where it’s due’ scheme due to the sheer number of articles already published. Also images that are not our own will not necessarily be updated to reflect the new policy. But rest assured that all new content will adhere to the new policy.

But in return, we ask one thing:

If we want to use any text, images or video that you have published, then we’ll ask you first and when it appears on Totally-transport.co.uk, you will be given credit for it and if you like we’ll add a hyperlink to your website too. What we ask, is that you do the same for us and give us the courtesy of dropping us an e-mail asking permission to use content from Totally-transport.co.uk before you make use of it somewhere else. We are more than happy to allow content to be used provided that permission is asked first and some credit for the content is given.

Thank you.

The team at Totally-transport.co.uk

Now committed to giving credit where it’s due

Going, going, gone!

The only steam locomotive owned by GWSR PLC, 0-6-0ST 'King George', has been sold to Didcot Railway Centre for an undisclosed sum. The engine has been sold on by the PLC for a variety of reasons, it is hoped that the proceeds from the sale of the Hunslet saddle tank will help go some way towards paying for the repairs to the Chicken Curve landslip. Also with the current working steam fleet being based at Winchcombe at present, little progress was being made on the 1942 built locomotive. The chassis of the engine, which became the first steam loco to reach Cheltenham Racecourse after track laying was completed in February 2001, was sent to Didcot last week and the boiler is expected to be moved to another location shortly. (Right: 'King George' runs around at Winchcombe on 30th December 2006. Was this one of the 0-6-0ST's last runs? We think it is. E-mail us if you know otherwise.) There are some, also unconfirmed, rumours that the saddle tanks will be removed and replaced with blue side tanks to re-create a certain cheeky blue tank engine. If this is the case, it is expected however, that the saddle tank will be retained for future back conversion.

Railway Round Up for week ending 14/10/11

GWSR

The line's Thomas weekend of 24/25th September was deemed to be a success with 2,500 vistiors flocking to the railway inspite of showery weather. On the locomotive front 28xx No:2807 has been off on a little holiday being the star attraction at the Keigley & Worth Valley Railway's Autumn Steam Gala on 7-9th October. (Left: BR 'Modified Hall' 4-6-0 No:7903 'Foremarke Hall' hurries past Woodmancote on 15/10/11) Meanwhile No:7903 is nearing the end of its first 10 year boiler ticket  and is due to we withdrawn for the once over by the boiler inspector who will hopefully allow an extention to the ticket. 'Foremarke' has been based on the GWSR since 2004. (See a HD video, or some photos, of No:7903's last weekend hauling passenger trains.)

SVR

The 'Valley's Autumn Gala was declared a great success, the visit of Scottish 0-6-0 No:828 bringing the SVR its largest visitor attendence figures since the 2008 gala with over 6,500 passengers over the three days. You can find out more about the gala and watch a HD video of the highlights by clicking here.

Shortly after the gala Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 No:46443 was withdrawn from traffic with severely corroded steam pipes close to the superheater. It was decided that any repair would be uneconomical at this stage because  'mogul's boiler ticket only had one year left to run. It is hoped No:46443 will be slotted into the overhaul queue at Bridgenorth so that it can be retured to traffic 'soon'(!). (No:46443 drifts into Bewdley during the SVR's Autumn Gala weekend on 24/09/11) Currently the SVR steam fleet is pretty stretched - to comfortably run a service the railway needs 8 or 9 serviceable locomotvies allowing for routine maintainance and unscheduled stoppages. With large prairie No:5164 out of service at the moment for various jobs to be completed there are only 5 steam engines, out of a possible 28 (including new builds), in operational condition. These are; Nos: 4566, 7812, 2818, 43160 & 42968. Although, the future looks brighter with 'West Country' 'Taw Valley' and unique Hawksworth 15xx pannier No:1501 both due to return to traffic sometime next year.

Didcot Railway Centre

After several years where the centre's future hung in the balance, dependant on a lease about to run out and with Network Rail's schemes for expansion, on October 6th a new 50 year lease with Network Rail was signed by the Chairman of the Great Western Society. (Left: No:3717 'City of Truro' with some of Didcot's wonderfully restored coaches at the GWR175 celebrations on 1/05/10) Richard Croucher, chairman, said: "I am pleased that we have now raised sufficient funds to be able to complete the acquisition of the new 50 year lease of Didcot Railway Centre and we would like to thank everyone who has supported us and made a financial contribution to allow the Great Western Society to achieve this aim. It draws to a close nine and half years of negotiations and I would like to thank my colleague Ian Smith for his perseverance throughout this time and encouragement to just keep going. We are now starting to look at the next stages of development at Didcot Railway Centre, which the long-term security of tenure allows us to undertake."

WSR

The West Somerset's end of season steam gala over the first weekend in October saw cloudless blue skies and blazing sunshine. The railway carried 4,830 passengers over the four day event, 11.3% more than last year. Long term WSR resident 'small prairie' No:5542 saw out the last few days of its 10 year boiler ticket at the gala, and almost immediately after being detached from its last train the 2-6-2T was dispatched to the South Devon Railway's boiler works at Buckfastleigh for overhaul. Already the tanks and cab have been removed, as have boiler backhead fittings, pistons, steam pipe cladding, smokebox door, boiler cladding and lining! The hope is that the work can be completed by mid March next year. You can keep track of the lastest progress by clicking here.Meanwhile, fellow WSR 'small prairie' No:4561's overhaul has been taken on by the WSR Association, the work will include, for the first time ever on a standard gauge loco, the complete replacement of the frames. Jeremy Hosking's 'Modified Hall' No:6960 'Raveningham Hall' may have missed its appearance at the Autumn Gala but she is now close to completion.

Bodmin and Wenford Railway

This weekend saw the Cornish line hold its annual Branch Line weekend and marked the return to service of LSWR Beattie well tank No 30587, a class that will be forever associated with the area.

Mid Hants Railway

The Watercress Line is gearing up for its big end of season steam gala over the last weekend in October. The three day event will see the railway playing host to four visitors in the shape of A1 No:60163 'Tornado', which will also be hauling ordinary service trains the weekend before, A4 No:4492 'Dominion of New Zealand' (Bittern), BR 7MT No:70000 'Britainnia', and, at the other end of the scale, N2 No:1744. This superb line up will be  supported by Nos: 92212,850 'Lord Nelson', 34007 'Wadebridge',45379 and 31806 from the home fleet operating an intensive timetable with goods, parcels and passenger workings. Find out more here.

Railway Round Up for week ending 16/09/11

GWSR

Not too much to report from the friendly line in the Cotswolds this week, except that the railway is preparing for a 'Day Out With Thomas' weekend on 24/25th September. Trains will be running between Cheltenham Racecourse and Winchcombe with Thomas and a variety of other locomotives handling a frequent passenger service. You can find out more by clicking here.

Excitement is mounting at the 'valley' - one of the biggest galas of the year is only a week away! Five visiting engines: celebrity new build A1 No:60163 'Tornado', returning for a second visit, this time resplendent in BR Brunswick green, No:6024 'King Edward I', deputising for unavailable classmate No:6023 'King Edward II', Scottish 0-6-0 No:282, making what is believed to be it's first visit south of the border in preservation, and replacing at short notice No:5029 'Nunney Castle' is large prairie No:4160 from the WSR. Joining the interlopers will be Nos:43160, 46443, 42968, 7812 & 2818 from the home fleet. Small Prairie No:4566 is acting as 'spare' for the weekend whlist it's bigger brother No:5164 is due some much needed work over the gala weekend.

It is still possible to pre-book tickets on-line or over the telephone - tickets are still available. To book please click here, or 'phone 01299 403816. Working timetables are also available for £5 a copy.

WSR

This week brought news that from the 18-21st September No:70000 'Britainia' will be working the 10.15am departure from Minehead, followed by the 12.30pm from Bishops Lydeard, the 2.15pm from Minehead and the 4.10pm from Bishops Lydeard.  Meanwhile, 'Manor' No:7828 'Norton Manor' has undertaken a number of test runs including a four coach test train from Minehead to Wiliton and back. No:7828 will hopefully be ready to take part in it's return to steam special on 18th September carrying it's original name 'Odney Manor' for the day before reverting to it's temporary name of 'Norton Manor' which it is expected to run with for about a year. It is in this guise that it will be the star attraction at the line's autumn steam gala on 29th  September to 1st October.

Railway Round Up for week ending 9/09/11

In the oceans of time since our last Railway Round Up quite a lot has been happening, so only the most important or latest developments will be posted in this RRU.

GWSR

The board of GWSR PLC has now received the recomendations for the work that should be carried out at the site of the Chicken Curve Embankment collapse. The Emergency Appeal is being re-launched, having raised £715,000 to support the repairs to the Gotherington landslip. The idea is that this new appeal will focus solely on the Chicken Curve slip. The Gotherington repairs came in under budget and were finished ahead of schedule, but the cost of all this was £850,000, although happily the railway's insurance contributed £500,000 with the GWSR funding the remaining £350,000. What this means is that there is still £350,000 in the fund. (Right: GWR 28xx 2-8-0 No:2807 makes a steamy departure from Cheltenahm Racecource on 18/08/11) However, the geo-technical survey confirmed that the Chicken Curve collapse was as bad, if not worse than the Gotherington slip and that the total sum for the repair could be £7,000 leaving a further £350,000 to be raised to pay for the repairs as the line's insurance won't pay out for another embankment collapse. So the new target is £350,000. You can find out more in a nutshell here. Or read the whole article on the GWSR website.Provided that there is a suitable response to the appeal it is expected that work will begin on the repair early next year with the aim of having the northern and southern sections of line re-connected by August 2012.

How can I help?

Ride on GWSR trains.

Make a donation - every little helps, whatever you feel able to donate, whether it's £5 or £50. Don't forget that you're a UK taxpayer you can gift aid your donation and  for every £1 you donate the GWSR gets 25p back from the taxman!

Following on from the disapointment of the 'blue king's (No:6023 'King Edward II') withdrawal from the line up for the Severn Valley's Autumn Gala on 23-25th September the railway has opted for a 'like for like' replacement in the shape of classmate No:6024 'King Edward I' which will be joining the other confirmed vistors No:60163 'Tornado', No:5029 'Nunney Castle', No:92212 & No:828.

Ivatt mogul No:43106, affectionately known as the flying pig, is nearly at the end of it's return 'home' to it's old stamping ground on the North Nolfolk Railway and is due to return to Bridgenorth on Wednesday. Locomotives in use this week include: Nos:2857,4566, 42968 and 46443. For a full loco roster click here.

WSR

After spending less than a month in traffic on the Minehead line Jeremy Hosking's Bullied pacific 4-6-2 No:34046 'Braunton' has been withdrawn from traffic again. This time, a simple routine inspection revealed that the tyres of the right hand driving wheels had slipped during operation this week. Now the seemingly unlucky 'West Country' Pacific has been withdrawn until further notice whilst the wheelsets are removed and re-tyred.Along similar lines, the much anticipated return of No:6960 'Raveningham Hall', the locomotive that hauled the opening train to Cheltenham Racecourse on the GWSR, has been postponed, meaning that it will miss it's booked appointment at the line's autumn gala from 29th September to 2nd October. However, two more locomotives have been added to the guest list in the shape of No:5029 'Nunney Castle', fresh from it's appearance at the SVR's autumn gala and No:34070 'Manston' from the Swanage Railway.(Above right: No:34070 'Manston' arrives at Bewdley on the SVR during that line's autumn gala on 25/09/10) The two new guests join GNR 'N2' No:1744 and members of the WSR's home fleet. Find out more here.

The Great Western Society's big 50th anniversary celebrations kick off this weekend, although without 94xx pannier tank No:9466 which had recently been re-painted into BR black because it's owner, Dennis Howells withdrew it from the gala line up. The event takes place over two weekends, a format which seems to  becoming increasingly popular. This weekend sees upto 5 locos in steam including guest 'Collett Goods' 0-6-0 No:3205, the naming of a First Great Western HST on the Saturday and a Traveling Post Office Demonstration on the Sunday. Next weekend's line up (17&18th September) is boosted by the addition of visitor No:1450 alongside No:3205 and the news that both the goods train and the vintage train will be in operation. It is expected that the AEC railcar No:22 and new build steam railmotor No:93 will also be running next weekend. Cost wise it is £12 for adults, £9 for children (3-15) and £10 for those over 60. Railway Round Up for week ending 12/08/11

GWSR - The embattled Gloucesterhshire and Warwickshire Railway has been rocked by a £60,000 metal theft from their yard at Toddington during the night of the 18/19th July in a well organised raid where thieves made off with a large quantity of non ferrous metals in the form of components for steam locomotives. It is thought the thieves had some inside information because they were able to bypass the CCTV cameras. One of the items taken was the brake ejector for P&O line, which is a complicated casting that will now need to be machined again. As a complete casting is was worth about £15,000 yet when melted down as scrap it is only worth about £60. The railway is appealing to anyone who might know or have seen anything out of the ordinary at all - whether it's people loitering around the Toddington area over the days preceding the break-in or unusual movement of vans or lorries during the night of 18 and 19 July. Anyone with information should contact Gloucestershire Police on 0845 090 1234 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. A reward of £1,000 is being offered for information that leads to any of the parts being returned. On a marginally more positive note, following the opportunist theft of four flower pots from Cheltenham Racecourse Station on Saturday 31st July and the issuing of 'wanted' posters, the perpetrator of this saddening crime has been arrested by Police following a call from an eagle eyed couple who recognised him.

SVR- The Severn Valley line has also suffered a setback this week, although not quite on the same scale - newly restored 'Blue King' No: 6023 'King Edward II' has been withdrawn from the line for their Autumn gala on 23-25th September because, according to a statement from the Great Western Society: 'Mechanically 6023 passed with flying colours but a few snags have shown themselves which need rectification before 6023 can re-enter traffic. Unfortunately one of those is a small oil pipe into the centre driving wheel axle box underkeep which has been fouled by being hit by a spoke which will necessitate the centre driving wheel set having to be dropped out to achieve the repair.' This means that No:6023 will not only miss it's appointment at the SVR but also will be unavailable for the GCR's gala on 6th-9th October. (Above: A last minute guest at last year's Autumn Gala on 25th September 2010 GWR 2-6-2T No:5542 is seen crossing Victoria Bridge) We are told that the SVR is currently in negotiations to procure an alternative guest which will have 'wide appeal'. Sticking with the Autumn Gala, the railway has arranged for another, slightly smaller blue loco to attend as well - the Ffestiniog Railway's Hunslet 0-4-0ST 'Britomart' which will be on a section of narrow gauge track in the car park at Arley over the weekend. Meanwhile, by popular request, a new ticket option has been introduced for the Autumn gala which is valid for travel after 6PM on the 23rd or 24th of September. The ticket costs £10.00 for adults and £5.00 for children (4-15yrs). The ticket allows travel on the following services: From Kidderminster: 18.00, 19.10, 20.10 & 21.40. From Bridgnorth: 18.42, 19.52, 21.30 & 22.17. A loco roster is not yet available for next week but will shall post the link or details of it here when it is added to the SVR site.
WSR- After spending much of this year so far laid up in the workshops No:34046 'Braunton' has finally re-entered traffic on the Minehead line with its new tender. No:34046 returned to service on 9th August and is now settling into hauling normal services. No:7828 'Odney Manor', to give it it's proper name will haul its first public since its withdrawal nearly 10 years ago in 2002 for a heavy general overhaul on 18th September at 1PM. The loco has been renamed 'Norton Manor - 40 Commando' in honour of the local marines. However, for one day it will return to it's original name. On Wednesday (10th August) the WSR enjoyed it's busiest day of the 2011 season during the Minehead Festival which culminated in  a Red Arrows display.(Left: GWR 38xx 2-8-0 No:3850 is seen drifting into Watchet in May 2009) According to  David McCubbin, WSR Plc's Sales and Marketing Manager, ' All trains arrived and departed Minehead full. It was great to see Minehead so busy with so many visitors enjoying the festival'. For many this underlines the fact that it isn't the enthusiasts which provide most of the income for heritage lines but the traveling public. What is could mean is that heritage lines stop catering so much for enthusiasts because they don't provide the income to make star studded galas break even.

Llangollen Railway - Talking of star studded galas, the Steel, Steam & Stars III gala which takes place on 21-29th April next year and is organised by the Betton Grange Society has received a boost to its line up with the news that LNWR 'Super D' 0-8-0 No:49395 will be visiting the Denbighshire line for the first time. The 'Super D' joins the already announced guests BR standard 7MT 4-6-2 No:70000 'Britannia', new build A1 4-6-2 No:60163 'Tornado' and The Tallylyn Railway's No:2 'Dolgoch'.  Procceds, as with the previous two mega galas on the line, will go toward the construction of the 81st Grange - No:6880 'Betton Grange'. Next year's event will go part of the way toward funding the casting of two new cylinders.

Railway Round Up for week ending 15/07/11

GWSR - The railway's bus rally and diesel gala last weekend was blessed with superb weather and very well attended despite the line currently being split in half. The event seems to be a winning combination for the Honeybourne Line and provided a great 'busy' atmosphere. A new combined ticket for both  northern and southern operations has been introduced, but now the rover is vaild for 48 hours allowing visitors to spread their visit over two days. GWSR chairman Malcolm Temple explained: "Each section has its own special appeal and each offers a quite different experience. We've found that many people might want to try both sections but feel that they would struggle to make the most of what we have to offer in a single visit, especially if they arrive from lunchtime onwards. So combined 'north' and 'south' tickets can now be taken on consecutive operating days!" The new tickets cost £15 from any booking office on the line or on the internet. Meanwhile the recent open days at the Carriage & Wagon works at Winchcombe have raised a marvelous £1,650 from donations and stalls all of which will go toward the railway's emergency appeal to repair the landslip at Chicken Curve and finish paying for the repairs to the Gotherington slip. (Above right: No:7903 'Foremarke Hall' runs around at Cheltenham in June 2008)

SVR - After spending a month when it should have been hauling service trains on the SVR in the workshops at Bridgenorth visiting 9F 2-10-0 No:92212 is finally ready for traffic. One operating date has been announced provisionally as this Sunday, 17th July when it is scheduled to haul the 12:15 from Kidderminster and 2:15pm from Bridgenorth. More dates are expected to be announced shortly but are subject to change at short notice. In other motive power news No:2857 is in the last stages of testing and it is hoped that it will be in service 'shortly'. Locomotives expected to be in action this week include Nos:5164,42968,43106,46443,92212 & 4566. Class 50 50031 will also be in operation on Saturday 16th July. No:7812 'Erlestoke Manor' is currently having a boiler washout and exam. (Above left: No:42968 pounds up past Foley Park on 14th July 2011)

WSR- The excitement is mounting in the Minehead line's motive power department with the news that the locomotive fleet will be bolstered by the return to traffic of no less than three giants of steam. One time SVR and GWSR resident No:6990 'Raveningham Hall's steam test happened on 14th July, only 5 days after the first steam test and 12 after the hydraulic test. The restoration team hope to have No:6990 back in one piece by the end of July and operational in time for the line's high summer season timetable, just a month after it's hydraulic test! Is this a record? Meanwhile fellow giant - Jeremy Hosking's SR 'pacific' No:34046 'Braunton's remedial work on it's tender is virtually complete and this week loco and tender were reunited. Should testing be successful then No:34046 is expected back hauling trains on Britain's longest preserved line from 26th July 2011. WSR stalwart No:7828 'Odney Manor' is also on the verge of making a comeback after being repainted into BR lined green and, all being well, No:7828 which is currently carrying 'Norton Manor' nameplates should be in traffic in the last week of August.

(Right: No:5553 awaits the 'right away' from Dunster in June 2009)

BWR - The Bodmin and Wenford is welcoming another small praire to Cornwall for its summer holiday - No:5521 is visiting the line over the summer and will be working with resident locos throughout the summer including fellow praire No:5552. No:5521, a local St Blazey shedded loco working on the Bodmin line for much of its working life, has been hired in as replacement for GWR 2-8-0T No:4247 which is undergoing an overhaul at the Flour Mill workshops in the Forest of Dean. Cornwall's only standard gauge steam railway enjoyed a record breaking month last in June when 8,000 visitors took a ride on the line. (Left: No:5521 at Didcot Railway Centre on 1st May 2010)

Ffestiniog / Welsh Highland Railways - Hunslet 'Blanche' is the latest in a line of locomotives to appear in fresh new liveries from Boston Lodge works. It was rolled out into the light of day on 11th July and is expected to be in operation soon.

Railway Round Up for week ending 8/07/11

GWSR - The Honeybourne Line has been gearing up for its summer diesel gala this weekend with operations split between the southern and northern sections of the railway. On the Cheltenham to Winchcombe section star of the show, newly restored class 73 electro diesel 73129 (in its original guise as E6036) will be in action sharing gala duties with class 20 D8137. Meanwhile on the northern section between Toddington and Laverton will be worked alternately between a pool of class 37s 37215 and 37324; and class 47s 47105 and Freightliner-liveried 47376 topping and tailing trains and the class 177 DMU. On Sunday no fewer than 46 buses will be in the station yard at Toddington as part of the railway's annual bus rally. Vehicles on show range from a 1946 Bristol K6A to a 2009 Scania and a number of the buses will be running free shuttles between Toddington and Winchcombe to connect with the trains. However, shuttles will also run to Broadway as well. Further details, including a timetable and loco roster can be found by clicking here. The emergency appeal is progressing well toward it's target after Stroud based Pathfinder Tours made a generous donation of £2,500 toward the appeal fund. The sum included two sizable individual donations as well as funds raised from raffles held on trains run by Pathfinder. Alan Bielby, Fund Raising Coordinator and Project Director, said:“While we have made significant progress towards our target of £1m to repair the embankments at Gotherington (now complete) and more recently at Chicken Curve, we still have a long way to go and the amazing £2,500 that Pathfinder’s customers have so generously given will take us a step closer to that goal.” There have been no further developments since our last Railway Round Up with the geo technical survey or contracts for landslip repair.(Above, right: 37324 and D8137 (20137) stand in the yard at Toddington on 5th March 2011)

SVR - Visiting 9F 2-10-0 No:92212 is still out of action having locomotive springs replaced and has not yet put in a revenue earning turn on the 'valley'. However, on a positive note 28xx No:2857 reportedly started testing on Monday (4th July) and is due in service 'soon'. Locomotives in operation this week include Nos: 5164,43106,7812 'Erlestoke Manor',42968,4566, and 46443 on Saturday (9th July) only. For full details click here. In the workshops the vacant space in the paintshop after the completion of 2857 has been taken by the by the boiler and firebox cladding sheets from 1501, the line's unique 15xx, outside cylindered 0-6-0PT. 1501’s frames and wheelsare mostly in top coat awaiting completion of mechanical work before.(Left: Early on the morning of 25th September 2010 Nos:4566,5164 & 3717 'City of Truro' brew up at Bewdley during the line's Autumn steam gala.)

WSR - One of the Minehead line's biggest money spinners, the Thomas the Tank day has once again proved a great success with 4,000 visitors flocking to the railway over last weekend (2nd-3rd July). After a whistle stop visit for repairs No:70000 'Britiania' is now expected to leave the railway on Monday 11th July although it will be running on Sunday 10 July. When it should work the 10.15am and 2.15pm from Minehead and the 12.25pm and 4.10pm from Bishops Lydeard. It is planned that the engine and its support coach will leave Minehead at 11.10am on Monday and depart Bishops Lydeard for the main line later in the day. On the motive power front regulars SDJR No:88, ex BR No:3850, WSR rebuild No:9351 and large prairie No:4160 are all expected to be in operation regularly this month whilst music mogul Pete Waterman's small prairie No:5553 has been rostered for Quantock Belle trains. Railway Round Up for week ending 1/07/11

We start this week with an apology - what with the Tyseley open weekend last week and the Bodmin gala just before we got a tad carried away and forgot to compile last week's Railway Round Up.

GWSR - The appeal fund is mounting up to over £700,000 with £16,000 from the GCR's Gr8 Escape gala whilst the SVR's special train raised a commendable £3,000. Also this weekend there will be the unusual  opportunity to visit the Carriage & Wagon works at Winchcombe where there's plenty in store, and the aim is to show visitors the whole range of skills involved in restoring a 63ft long, 32-ton passenger coach. There will be no charge although there will be a collection for the railway's emergency appeal fund.

There have been no further developments since our last Railway Round Up with the geo technical survey or contracts for landslip repair. (Right: Turkish 8F No:45160 clanks into Greet tunnel with a train for Winchcombe on 1st June 2011)

SVR - GWR 2-8-0 No:2857 is on the brink of entering traffic on the Severn Valley. The loco has passed its boiler insurance steam test on 22nd June although the valves still need setting and running in will take place after final weighing. Meanwhile, fellow Bridgenorth shedmate 9F No:92212 is now not expected to be in operation this weekend for the line's 1940's event as planned apparently, although this cannot be offically confirmed, this is because some broken springs have been found on the locomotive. No:92212 has yet to pull a train on the SVR because of broken tender springs.

WSR - Although No:60163 Tornado's two week visit to the Minehead line has just ended Britain's newest standard gauge locomotive had already been booked in for another visit to the WSR in late August and early September - it is expected that the A1 will be in operation from 27th August to 7th September during which time it is anticipated that it will haul trains during the 'Late Summer Weekend' on 3-4th September. On Monday 4th July No:70000 'Britiania' is timetabled to run light engine from Wiliton to Minehead arriving at 9:45am. Details have also been announced of the WSR's popular Autumn gala, taking place this year between 29th September and 6th October (?). The locomotive line up includes as its star guest GNR N2 0-6-2T no 1744, but the gala also marks one of the last appearances of GWR 'small prairie' No:5542 before it's boiler ticket expires. However, all being well both No:6960 'Raveningham Hall' and No:7828 'Norton Manor' (Odney Manor) should be making their first gala appearances after overhauls. (Above, Left: No:5542 awaits departure from Cheltenham Racecourse during the GWSR's 2008 Cotswold Festival of Steam.)

Dean Forest Railway - The DFR is gearing up for it's Great Western Branchline weekend this weekend (2/3rd July 2011) witth auto train and goods workings planned along with some GWR cameo scenes. In action will be Nos:1450 (which will be facing south instead of north), 5521 & 9681. An intensive timetable will be in operation with No:5521 and No:9681 running morning and evening goods trains on each day. Not to mention a double headed train at midday on both Saturday and Sunday. For further details and a timetable please click here(Right: No:9681 runs around at Norchard whilst on a driver experience turn on 11th July 2009)

Wensleydale Railway - The 16mile Wensleydale Railway is still relatively unknown in enthusiast's circles but the rapidly developing line is holding its first steam gala this weekend with GWR 56xx No:5643 and No:30777 'Sir Lamiel'. For more information click here. (Left: No:30777 is seen running around at Kingscote on the Bluebell Railway  on 24th October 2010 during their Giants of Steam Gala

Ffestiniog / Welsh Highland Railways - In a historic move last weekend, on the 25th June 2011 the first Welsh Highland Heritage Railway train ran on WHR metals for brake test trials. The test train, double headed by WHHR locos Gelert and Gertrude, was run in conjunction with Welsh Highland engineers to test braking systems. The WHHR operates air-braked stock, while F&WHR trains are vacuum-braked. Brake tests were carried out at speeds of upto 20mph and were completed satisfactorily. It was the first time that a train from the WHHR had traveled beyond the section laid by the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway volunteers. WHHR Chairman Martyn Owen said "This is an historic moment for both railways. At times it seemed that it would never happen, but the wait has definitely been worthwhile."  F&WHR General Manager Paul Lewin added  "We're very pleased to be working with our colleagues at the WHHR. The new spirit of cooperation can only bring benefits to both our organisations and to tourism in the area." More trials are planned for the future. Here is a little video of the test train from National Preservation User AndrewT, thanks. (Above right: NG/G16 No.87 seen in August 2009)

It is planned to start work on the new bridge in November 2011 and the remaining works in January and February 2012. As always with such projects donations are most welcome! Also a special locomotive re-naming ceromony took place today with No:7828 'Odney Manor', which is just about to be re-launched into traffic, being re-named 'Norton Manor, 40 Commando' in recognition of the work that gthe marines are doing around the world and have done in the past. (Above, left: No:60163 'Tornado' awaits departure from Crowcombe Heathfield on 13th June 2009)

Good start to steam operations on GWSR

The operations over the Easter Weekend on the GWSR attracted just over 2,000 passengers to travel on both halves of the line as the steam operation is now in full swing between Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse. The ticket income exceeded expectations over the weekend and it was also announced that the Emergency Appeal has reached the £0.5million mark which has allowed the contracts for the geo-technical survey and drainage work at Chicken Curve to be placed.

However, sounding a note of caution, the line's chairman, Malcom Temple warned that the 'railway wasn't out of the woods yet' and 'maintaining both ticket and appeal income is vital to not just rebuild the embankment but rebuild the railway's financial stability for the future.'

Emergency stop on SDR

The South Devon Railway's services were interupted on the 26th April when, according to a SDR press release, the train 'was brought to a rapid halt' because of an injured lamb the crew found lying in between the rails. The lamb, who has now been nicknamed 'Lucky' is being looked after at the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm. (Right: driver, Charlie with Lucky on the footplate! Photo: BBC)

Stagecoach warned about 'wheel loss' incidents

Several Stagecoach operations have beeen warned by the Scottish Traffic Commisioner following eight cases of 'wheels becoming loose' since 2009.The Traffic Commisioner, Joan Aitken said: “Wheel-loss incidents are of great concern to me. They have the potential to cause serious damage including death and injury and also damage to property. To the spectating public or those who suffer injury (in this case very fortunately there were no instances of anyone being hurt), they appear as self-evident failures of maintenance.” Stagecoach, in a statement, responded to thissaying the insicents had been 'taken very seriously.'

Disapointing visitor numbers from Gr8 Escape

Unfortunately, the Great Central Railway's Gr8 Escape gala, despite the marvlous weather, was not as popular as it was hoped to have been. In a statement GCR president, Bill Ford said: "The figures for the weekend have been very disappointing and we believe this is due to a combination of circumstances including the weather, which dare I say it, was too good! There were other events like the Grand National, opening of Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, Thomas the Tank at Shackerstone, which obviously had some effect".

Users on forums such as National Preservation have also cited the possible saturation of the market for steam galas by the Great Central Railway and  point out the fact that the gala did not really appeal to the general public.

Figures have not yet been released for how much money was raised or the exact visitor numbers.

GWSR aid all round!

The Great Central's GWSR Aid weekend over 9/10th April was blessed with marvelous weather over both days. Unfortuntely, Totally-transport.co.uk was unable to attend but we will still support the GWSR with a trip and a donation sometime soon.

This weekend also brought news that the North Norkfolk Railway will be supporting the GWSR on 23rd April - Easter Saturday. The North Norfolk Railway hopes to raise in excess of £10,000 for the GWSR by donating proceeds from the days operations.NNR Managing Director Hugh Harkett "When disasters like the embankment collapses on the GWSR happen, it’s vital that all of us in the heritage railway movement rally round". Members of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway will be on hand during Easter Weekend to spearhead the fundraising effort.
In another further generous offer, the M&GN Society have also made the J15, a previous visitor to the GWSR, available to be used on Driver for a Fiver on the day. (Left: 8F No:45160, one of the stars of the Gr8 Escape gala, is seen at Hailes on 8th January 2011)

South Devon Railway 'Steam Aid' for GWSR

The South Devon Railway (SDR) has announced that it will be running 'steam aid' Branch line specials this Saturday (19th March). The West Country line will be operating three extra steam trains alongside the railway's 'bubblecar' DMU in aid of the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway's (GWSR) landslip appeals. The two landslips at Chicken curve and Gotherington are expected to cost over £1million to fix. Malcom Temple, the GWSR's chairman said: "The support shown by the South Devon Railway is wonderful and, on behalf of every member of our staff who are all volunteers, I can say that we are deeply grateful for this exceptional gesture."

(above, left: SDR based small prarie 2-6-2T No:5526 is seen with an 'autotrain' at Toddington on the GWSR on 23rd May 2009) SDR General Manager Dick Wood said: "I realised we had a chance to use some of our planned steam auto crew training runs this weekend to help raise some funds for the GWSR. It'll be a wonderful opportunity for people who come to ride on our diesel services to pay a little bit more to also go on a steam trip too and help another stricken railway with whom we have enjoyed a close relationship for many years." He added:  "I hope this special fund raising day will generate some useful money to help get them over their troubles." The three extra steam auto trains will run at 11.30, 1.00 and 3.00 from Buckfastleigh and 12.15, 2.15 and 3.45 from Totnes on Saturday 19th March. Riding aboard a 1950s BR disel multimple unit you will be able to enjoy the nine mile round trip that takes in Stanway Viaduct, Laverton, Toddington and Hailes Abbey.

In BR days there was a halt at Laverton, althoguh at present there are no plans to replace it. Today tickets cost £9.00 adults, £8.00 senior citizens, £5.00 children and £27 for a family ticket (two adults, three children). The 10:30 DMU from Toddington will be the first passenger train to halt at Laverton since the last 'Autotrain' on 7th March 1960. You can find the full timetable here and fare details here.

Update on the GWSR appeal event at the Great Central

The event on the 9/10th April that the GCR is holding in aid of the GWSR has been bolstered by the news that the event will now feature no less than six 2-8-0 locomotives, two of which will now be coming from the Toddington line. It has now been announced that GWR 2-8-0 No:2807 will be joining GWSR shedmate 8F No:45160 at the event. Also running will be two other 8Fs nos: 48305 and red 8624. In addition 38xx No:3850 will also be in operation and the owning group will be donating all their steaming fees from the event to the landslip appeal, and as an added bonus, the GCR's 'Jinty' 0-6-0 tank locomotive no. 47406 will be offering 'drive for a tenner' experiences at Loughborough.. All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the landslip appeal. Download a poster for the Gr8 escape gala here.

Approval for Laverton extension

Her Majesties' Railway Inspectorate has given the go ahead for trains to run over the new extension on the GWSR from Stanway viaduct to Laverton. This is inspite of the outstanding work of re-cliping and stressing the rails on the new continuously welded rail used on this section of the line.

The total length of CWR (continuously welded rail) is 2,346m (just over 2km), and there are 3,640 sleepers with 14,560 clips (four per sleeper).  For stressing purposes, it is divided into two lengths to be stressed on two consecutive days.  That's just a taste of what goes on away from the public gaze! This work means the line should be ready for the first public services with the Diesel Multiple Unit that starts on the 2nd April.

The GCR is holding a GWSR appeal event on 9/10th April to raise funds for the landslip appeals.
Locos running:
- LMS 8F 48305
- LMS 8F 48624
- GWR 38xx 3850
- and an as yet un announced guest from the GWSR, that according to the GCR is a: 'locomotive that has never visited another preserved railway before and is also new into working order and has an interesting story to tell'
(Right: Turkish 8F No:45150 is dragged past Didbrook by a Class 25 on 8th January 2011 shortly after the landslip at Chicken Curve)

Also the owning group of No:3850 have agreed to let their locomotive stay on for an extended period and in addition will be donating their steaming fees to the appeal.
More details to follow.
Find more information on the GCR website.

Back to black for 'Lydham'

No:7827 'Lydham Manor' is to be repainted for the first time in preservation into its authentic BR mixed traffic black livery. As one of ten BR built 'Manors' the only colurs that No:7827 can authentically carry are BR Brunswick Green or BR black. Also, 'Lydham' will be undergoing a temporary identity change to No:7800 'Torquay Manor' for a specil event on 29/30th May. It will then return to it more normal identity however retaining the BR livery.

(Left: No:7827 'Lydham Manor' at Didcot on 1st May 2010)

Some regard this change as a nod from the Paignton and Darmouth Railway toward the enthusiast fraternity particularly as 'Lydham's current livery is in fact only an interpretation of a GWR livery.

Curtains for 'Bradley'?

On Friday 11th February 2011 No:7802 'Bradley Manor' failed a routine boiler examination and cracks in firebox were discovered along with burnt ends on a number of small tubes in the boiler. It is though to be uneconomical to repair at the moment with only 8 or so months left on its 10year boiler ticket. It is likely that another locomotive will be hired in from else where. Uncomfirmed reports on several enthusiasts' forums suggested a locomotive such as No:7903 'Foremarke Hall' from the GWSR, which at the moment is struggling with tow major landslips, see news item 12th February.(above right: No:7802 'Bradley Manor' stands at Bridgenorth on 25th September 2010 during the SVR autumn gala.)

Wartime black for 'Scotsman'

In a suprise decision the National Railway Museum has announced that the 1923 built machine will carry LNER wartime black without smoke deflectors for its running in period before it is painted into the Apple Green hue it is most famous for. 'Scotsman' will carry 'NE' on its tender flanks and No:103 on one side and No:502 on the other. However, the iconic locomotive will only carry these colours runing trials and steaming tests. Steve Davies, Director of the NRM, said: 'When 'Flying Scotsman' is completed this summer, she will of course be painted Apple Green. However, we couldn't resist the opportunity to offer her fans a bit of variety by seeing her completer her steam tests and commissioning runs in Waritme LNER black. The last time 'Flying Scotsman' was seen in this livery was during World War Two, and this will b the first time that No:4472 or any other North Eastern Pacific has been seen in this livery during its preserved existence'.

GWSR timetables

The Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway has released its timetables for 2011. This year the railway is in a position of offer a true railway of two halfs - the southern section from Winchcombe to Cheltenham Racecourse will be operated by steam locomotives. Meanwhile the Northern section will be operated from Toddington to Laverton by a DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) which the railway is hiring from another line. It is almost a nine years since diesel enthusiasts last had the chance to ride in a DMU on the GWSR when the line's resident DMU was taken out of service.(Above Left: A class 115/117 DMU on the West Somerset Railway in 2009) Trains from Toddington to Laverton will start, all being well, on the 2nd April, however, this hinges on the completion of the run round loop at Laverton and the tamping and welding of the line between Stanway viaduct and Laverton.

Dependant on tracks and ballast being laid at Gotherington in time it is hoped that the steam service can commence on 22nd April.

(Right: Nos: 2807 and 45160 at Winchcombe on 29th December 2010 during the railway's Christmas Cracker Gala. These locos are expected to form the backbone of the steam service this season.)The year the traditional May steam gala will not be taking place due to the obvious reason that the railway has little funds spare to spend on bringing in visiting locomotives. 2807 picks up HRA award.

Yesterday evening at Swindon Locomotive Works Cotswold Steam Preservation picked up the Heritage Railway Association / Steam Railway Magazine Readers Award for the 29 year retoration of 28xx 2-8-0 No:2807. The 105 year old locomotive beat off competion from two other projects also at the GWSR; the resortation of TCDD (Turkish State Railways) No:45160 and the railway's own GWR 175 gala.

In his acceptance comments, Geof Adlingon, chairman of Cotswold Steam Preservation said: "I may be a bit biased, but restoration of 2807 is representative of all that is worthwhile in our industry. The project shows what can be achieved by the hard work of dedicated volunteers for nearly 30 years.  Importantly, it has brought together the skills, expertise and resources of many in the industry in locatious throughout the country."

(right: Award winning 28xx No:2807 drifts into Winchcombe during the GWSR's Christmas Cracker Gala on 29th December 2010, totally-transport.co.uk) Malcolm Temple, chairman of the GWSR  said: "I'm truly delighted at this richly deserved honour and I know it will be warmly welcomed by our volunteers, at a time when there is little else to be cheerful about.I think this really underlines what our railway, and the work all of the groups who own locomotives both steam and diesel; is all about.  We can't let the current problems overcome us and I for one look forward to being on the first train hauled by 2807 over the full length of our line, once the embankment collapses have been repaired".

Progress at last for GWSR.

It gives me great pleasure to be able to bring you some good news about the GWSR to counteract some of the recent bad news about the Chicken Curve slip. The slip at Gotherington is almost completely repaired and now all that stands between Winchcombe and Cheltenham is the small matter of laying balast and track (follow the link for a photo). SVR attacked by 'professional' scrap metal thieves.

A gang of well organised scrap metal thieves have ramsacked the SVR's boiler workshops at Bridgenorth and stolen copper sheets worth between £50,000 and £60,000 in a night time raid that Police described as 'pre-planed and highly profesional'.

The gang broke into the workshops on Thursday 20th January via an air vent, and having disabled the security alarm hot wired the 30ton capacity overhead gantry crane and used it to lift eleven copper sheets into a lorry or van. The cooper sheets had been destined for the fireboxes of 'Jinty' 47383 and Stanier 8F No.48773. The railway has offered a £5,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the recovery of the metal.

The thieves had made an earlier, unsuccesful attempt to raid the workshops 24 hours previously, as a result of which the SVR immediately brought in specialist advisors to take a hard look at existing site security.

The gang also stole an outside steam pipe for 15xx No:1501.Scenes of crime officers from West Mercia constabulary have been examining footprints left in the dust and scrapes on the bolier shop wall that are thought to have been caused by the getaway vehicle.

Following the raid, the SVR moved swiftly to install new security arrangements at Bridgnorth and at other sites on the railway, and a new, much-tightened regime of procedures has been put into effect.

Loss adjusters from the Severn Valley Railway’s insurers have been appointed, and it is likely that the railway will be compensated for the full cost of the stolen copper, but said SVR General Manager Nick Ralls: “It’s still sickening - a kick in the guts. This wasn’t an opportunist crime, it was well-planned. Just like everyone else in business though, we’re feeling the pinch of recession, and these are hard times for everyone. We didn’t need this.”

Not all bad news for GWSR

I am pleased to be able to bring you some good news from the embattled Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway for a change! The Laverton extention should be completed within a matter of weeks (see earlier news item 20th Jan). Also, the cost of refirbishing the road overbridge at Broadway  is estimated to be considerable less than previously forecast. Meanwhile, at the Gotherington slip although the recent bad weather has slowd progress somewhat the contracters are just one week behind schedule. It is expected to be ready to have track laid on it by the end or March / early April.

Also, yesterday at the locomotive department general meeting plans were discussed for future running which is likely to envolve the transportation of two steam locos from Toddington ot Winchcome by road to operate trains from Winchcombe to Cheltenham Racecourse when that section is re-opened. It is thought that there will also be a shuttle service on the Northern section from Toddington to Hayles Bridge and back along ot the railhead at Laverton.

On the loco front 2-8-0s Nos;2807 and 45160 have both passed their annual 'cold' boiler exams and No:7903 'Foremarke Hall' is undergoing some work on its brakes. No:5542 is tucked up quietly in the shed, whilst Nos:3717 and 92203 are away from the railway. No:92203 'Black Prince' has traveled to Crewe for an intermediate overhaul which includes new superheaters, new tender wheels and some repair work on the boiler. No:3717 'City of Truro' is still away form the GWSR on the Great Central and is not expected back until May.

GWSR slip latest

Further to our previous news item about the second embankment collapse on the GWSR close to Winchccome station, the GWSR has recieved some much needed publicity from appearing in several local news papers and on the BBC news website.

Also, on a brighter note class 08 diesel No:08683 became the first locomotive to travel north of Laverton bridge which is an important step in opening up the line northwards toward Laverton. (see the photo here)

You can read the whole sorry story here on the GWSR website and find out how to contribute to the appeal.

No 'Lizzie' for WSR Spring gala but 'Lamiel' instead

Unfortunately, the scheduled visit of No:6201 'Princess Elizabeth' has been canceled. In a statement the West Somerest Railway said:"Sadly we will have to wait a little longer to hear and see a Stanier Pacific locomotive at work at the head of a train on the WSR. We have been advised that the locomotive will not now be available for the March Gala, which is a disappointment obviously, but means we can hopefully look forward to a debut in the not too distant future." However, on the plus side a replacement has been found in the shape of Southern Railway 'King Arthur' class 4-6-0 No:777 'Sir Lamiel' which will now be taking No:6201's place at the gala. (Right: No:30777 'Sir Lamiel' at Kingscote on the Blubell Railway on 24th October 2010. More slip woes for GWSR

As if the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway didn't have enough on its plate already there has now been another serious case of embankment collapse at Chicken Curve near Winchcombe. Of course this will require more money and effort alongside the Gotherington collapse. All we can do for the time being is support the appeal as much as we can. This latest slip is similar to that at Gotherington and is expected to cost £0.5million to fix. The railway thought it had put a disasterous year behind it - 2010 was the worst year in the railway's 29 year history. Unfortunatly the railways insurers are not willing to pay out for this latest dificulty. Also, as the railway isn't runnig trains at the moment it has virtually no income. The railway is organising an emergency metting to decide on the best plan of action. This embankment, known as 'Chicken Curve' has historically caused problems for the GWR and BR.  CLICK HERE TO DONATE NOW!

No show from 'Tornado'

Due to unforseen circumstances No:60163 'Tornado's winter maintainance will take longer than planned. Its time in the workshop at the NRM has been extended for two months to April. Now a number of its mainline tours have been canceled and its planned visit to the Severn Valley has also been postponed. The delay is due to more extensive repairs being required than first thought. Several hundred firebox stays are in need of replacment. Also, upon arrival at the National Railway Museum in York, the Trust’s engineers identified cracks in the two back corners of the foundation ring and evidence of possible cracks in the front corners. However, it must be said that these were well known problems with the original locomotives of the 'A1' class. Only a very small number of weeping stays were identified out of the more that 2,000 in the firebox and therefore the overwhelming majority of the firebox stay replacements are precautionary to prevent further unplanned work during periods in traffic. The Trust is working with its boiler inspector and DB Meiningen, the boiler and firebox’s manufacturer, to determine the most appropriate way forward. Totally-transport.co.uk look forward to seeing a Brunswick Green 'Tornado' later in 2011. (Right: No:60163 is seen at Tysley in 2008)

Poor end to year for GWSR

2010 has certainly not been kind to the GWSR - first in the spring there was the landslip at Gotherington, which is expected to cost over £1 million to fix. Now after several bouts of very heavy snowfall over the past week the railway has been forced to cancel all of its Santa trains from 18-24th December. And all this weather has have a big impact on hte railway's revenue. According to the railway's chainman, Malcom Temple the railway has lost between £50,000 and £60,000. He was keen to stress that this wasn't just from the fares but also the lost money in catering and in the gift shop at Toddington. He also said:

"Above all, I deeply regret the disappointment that this has brought to hundreds of eager youngsters and parents.  I know that for many people the railway's Santa Specials are real highlights of the Christmas season - we know that because you tell us so and you come to visit us year after year.Everyone on the railway really is devastated that we have had to let down so many people."

However, the railway is pulling out all the stops to get trains running after Christmas, from 28th December and has issued an appeal to all volunteers to come and help dig out the railway on Monday 27th December. However this does mean that the Christmas Diesel day has been canceled, partly because of the risk of serious damage should ice get caught up in their engines. (Above: One of the few good times for the GWSR in 2010 - The GWR 175 celebrations. During which panneir tank No:9466 is seen storming out of Gotherington)

But on a psotive note the weather forcast suggests a slow thaw after Christmas and the Christmas Cracker steam gala is stll set to go ahead with Turkish/LMS 8F 2-8-0 no. 45160; GWR small Prairie no. 5542; GWR 2800 class 2-8-0 no. 2807 and Modified Hall class 4-6-0 no. 7903 'Foremarke Hall'. Sadly No:3717 is away from the railway and No:92203 is currently stripped down for repairs. Totally-transport.co.uk wishes them and the SVR best of luck in clearing the snow and ice so trains can run once more.

Yet more snowy problems for Severn Valley line

As mentioned in our previous news item the Severn Valley have been forced to cancel five Santa trains which were due to run, however six are still running:  9.45, 10.45, 11.45, 12.45, 1.45 and 2.45. The cancelations were caused due to a points failure at Kidderminster Platform 2. According to unconfirmed reports on the Severn Valley Railway Assocation website this was due to a SPAD (Signal Passed At Danger) which caused a locomotive to run over the points in the wrong direction. Replacement parts are on order, but with the Christmas break these will not arrive in time. The railway's general manager Nick Ralls said in a statement yesterday: “It’s not the way we would have chosen to sign off  from a very busy and buoyant schedule of pre-Christmas trains” he continued: “and we’re acutely aware that the cancellations will be very disappointing for those passengers who had booked seats." However, one bit of good news is that the post Christmas 'Festive Season' service from Kidderminster to Bridgenorth is unaffected. Unconfirmed reports on the SVR online forum suggested yesterday evening that trains would be topped and tailed by the same locomotives as on the roster which we posted last week. At the moment this the suggested order of engines but Totally-transport.co.uk are not able to confirm for you if these are correct:

7802 and 42968 on 9.45, 1145, 1.45, 3.30 [not specified which is leading]
5764 (front) and 43106 on 10.45
7812 (front) and 43106 on 1245, 2.45

Further cancelations for preserved lines

The GWSR has sadly been forced to cancel all remaining Santa Special trains for Thursday (23rd) and Christmas Eve (Friday). Other services that have been hit by the bad weather are the Mince Pie trains on Boxing Day (Sunday). However a normal service is set to resume of the 27th December with the Christmas diesel day.

Also on the Severn valley, which until now has managed to maintain a cose to full service, thanks to the herculean efforts of volunteers has been forced to cansel some Santa Trains on Christmas eve. Five departures from Kidderminster have been canceled. The 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 13:30 and 15:00 departures have been canceled because of weather related problems at Kidderminster. This is believed to be due to a problem with some sets of points. Passengers which were due to travel or either the GWSR or SVR will recieve a full refund and passengers on the SVR effected by the cancelation of some trains will get some money off travel in 2011.

News added 21st December 2010

This is snow time to be running trains!

Almost a foot of snow is still lying on the ground in some areas which has lead the GWSR to cancel all its Santa special trains for Wednesday 22nd,and Thursday 23rd. Whether trains will run on Christmas Eve remains to be seen. Services after Christmas are likey to run as normal acording to Malcom Temple, the railway's chairman. These cancelations will only add to railway's dreadful year, with the landslip at Gotherington in the spring already eating into the railway's profits.

However the Severn Valley Railway has managed to keep its Santa trains running despite the snow and have recived worthy publicity by appearing on local TV news bulletins. At the moment the SVR are running today and a decision will be made later today about operations for Wednesday.

Snow stops Santa in his tracks

Due to the recent heavy snowfall accross the UK over the weekend many preservered railway's have been forced to cancel their Santa Special services. For example the GWSR had to cancel all its Santa trains for yesterday and today because infrastructure shuch as points, signals and water cranes became frozen. Now all those who booked to travel will get a refund. However, in neighbouring Worcestershire the Severn Valley Railway were still able to run their Santa trains, although the evening dining train and carol trains were canceled. At the moment (8:15am) the SVR are still planning to run a normal service.

Southeastern passengers voice complaint with festive carol

Disgruntled Southeastern Trains passengers have chosen an unusual method of getting their complaints across to the railway's management. After the recent cold snap a group of angry commuters got together at Charring Cross Station  to voice their feelings and sang a special version of the '12 days of Christmas'. Here is what they sang:

WHAT THEY SANG

On the 1st day of Christmas Southeastern said to me,

There are no trains the rest of the week

On the --- day of Christmas Southeastern said to me,

2 points are stuck

3 signal failures

4 missing drivers

5 broken trains

6 dirty toilets

7 flakes are falling

8 dodgy heaters

9 power failures

10 trains are cancelled

11 porky pies

12 hundred stranded

And there's no trains the rest of the week.

Provisional WSR gala line up

£19 million for Britain's first zero emissions bus route.

The first of eight new, hydrogen fuel cell buses for London is due to enter service on the 18th December.  The buses will operate the RV1 route - the same route which tested the capital's first hydrogen fuel cell buses. These new vehicles have been developed by Wrightbus, Ballard and ISE and will be operated by First. Boris Johnson, mayor of London, says: “These buses are a marvel of hydrogen technology, emitting only water rather than belching out harmful pollutants. They will run through the most polluted part of the city, through two air pollution hotspots, helping to improve London's air quality. This is just another way that our city is harnessing pioneering low emission public transport to improve quality of life, whether the New Bus for London, electric vehicles or my public bike hire scheme."

Jonathan Symonds, of consulting engineers David Symonds Associates, says that two aspects of the work are now starting.  "We have put in the first of around 800 soil nails and this will stabilise parts of the embankment that have shown the least movement.  Meanwhile, the contractor charged with rebuilding the worst affected collapse has removed the ash from the worst affected part of the embankment, area 2, and will shortly be starting the main work of removing the collapsed soil."

No pressure for JCB

UK based excavator and heavy plant manufacturer JCB has developed an extra special digger for leading Scottish construction firm; Malcom. JCB developed and supplied a tracked JS145 with very low ground bearing pressure. This was essential for the wet, loose and slippery conditions found on many of the sites which Malcom works on.  Working in conjunction with the customer and local dealer, Scot JCB, JCB delivered a JS145 model with a longer track frame and 1,500mm wide track pads, that provide a truly ultra-low pressure platform from which to work. Group operations and environment manager at Malcolm, David Balmer said: “We have decided to replace two standard low ground pressure machines with this new extra wide option. Those machines are very hard worked, so it was worth investing to get a new machine that is right for our needs. Now that the purpose-built JS145 is on site, it’s doing the job that we had hoped it would.”

  • GWSR stolen benches return

The GWR station benches which were stolen from Cheltenham Racecourse station last Friday have been returned. The theives appeared to have no idea of the value of their goods as they offered them to a local company which reclaims building materials and various other items.

Ronson's (the company which reclaims buliding materials) Ron Jones explains: "I took a call from a chap who said he had some old station seat ends and would I be interested?  I told him that I would and next day he turned up in a battered old van groaning under the weight of all these castings.  I have a bit of an interest in railways myself.  have to say I was pretty suspicious because you don't get this number of specialist railway artefacts in such good condition all turning up at once!  He didn't give a very plausible explanation of how he came by them, either. Then I saw the article in the 'Echo' and heard the news on Radio Gloucestershire about the theft and put two and two together."   However, the thieves sold 16 of the bench ends to Ronson, so three remain missing. If anyone can cast light on the three that are still missing,  the leader of the Cheltenham area group, Bob Stark, would love to know.

    GWSR targeted by thieves

The Gloucestershire and Warwickshire has suffered the loss of several Great Western benches from Cheltenham Racecourse Station. The benches are, in total worth about £4,000, some were original and others were replicas. Each one weighs about 25kg.

Col. Bob Stark, Chairman of the railway's volunteer Cheltenham Area Group said that the bench castings disappeared on Friday 17th September.  "One of our volunteers reported that the benches had been dismantled and the timber seat and back planks were left strewn on the platform." He continued "We searched the station area and found the castings stacked up in a hedge behind our signal box.  We called the police and organised some help to move these very heavy items to safe storage.  But when we returned little more than an hour later, they had disappeared in broad daylight, which suggests we were being watched."

The station is equipped with cctv security cameras and the tape shows that they were removed overnight by shadowy figures using flashlights.

Bob believes theft of the bench ends is the work of thieves who know their value and have a market for them, rather than common metal thieves. Mr Stark added:"They are not worth much as scrap metal but undamaged castings have a value of up to £200 each.  At least three of them are original GWR items which would be worth considerably more at auction.  The thieves avoided harming them - the timbers being carefully removed and the castings unbolted from the platform.Only one was left behind and that was because the bolts securing it to the platform were rusted. It saddens me greatly that the people who did this would describe themselves as railway enthusiasts. They're clearly knowledgeable and well aware of the value of Great Western Railway artefacts and I believe that they have a ready market.  They could have been taken to order for collectors or another former-Great Western heritage railway."

If you saw anything suspious around the station on Thursday (16th Sept) evening around the station please report it to the police.

    Electric new arrivals

The first of three new electric Optare Solos is now in operation in Durham. The buses were mostly paid for by the Govement's Green Bus scheme. The Solo EVs operate between the railway station and the coach park ferrying visitors to the World Heritage Museum at the Cathedral. The many old buildings and large visitor numbers make this an environmentally-sensitive area. Durham county council estimates that using battery-electric buses will save 42 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
The two routes include steep inclines, and trials have shown that the EVs perform better than existing diesel Solos when climbing these hills with the added benefit of regenerative charging of the batteries during descents.

    Pete Waterman launches appeal

Further to our news story 3rd September: Pete Waterman, the new honorary president of the GWSR launched the £1 million appeal to fix the landslip at Gotherington by visiting the railway on Tuesday (7th September). Waterman arrived several hours early to help prepare GWR 2-8-0 No:2807 to haul a special train for the media. 105 year old No:2807 has just steamed after a quarter century overhaul.

Once members of the media: radio, television, websites and newspapers arrived at Toddington, Waterman was out of his overalls and talking about the railway and the big contribution it makes to the local community:

"This railway plays a big part in keeping people's jobs in local businesses that supply the railway or run pubs or hotels," he said.  "When this railway suffers, and it has seen passenger numbers drop sharply because of it, then they suffer too." He said.

A special train hauled by 2807 and fired by Pete Waterman carried the press over the seven miles to Gotherington. Where, Darren Fairley, the railway's volunteer properties director and a railway civil engineer by profession, explained to the media how the embankment collapse happened and also how the damage is being repaired.

The media had plenty of opportunity to talk to Pete Waterman, Darren Fairley and the railway's chairman, Malcolm Temple, over a sandwich on the journey back to Toddington.  That evening, BBC TV covered the event on its evening news programmes.

    New honorary president for GWSR

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway was delighted to be able to confirm that music industry statesman and heritage railway preservationist Pete Waterman has agreed to become honorary President of the railway. His main role will be fronting the emergency appeal for the Gotherington Landslip (which you can donate to here) but he'll also be involved in openoing the extention to Laverton.

"This is tremendous news and a real boost to our railway," says Malcolm Temple, GWSR Plc Chairman.

Accepting the invitation to be President, Pete Waterman said:

"I've had a long admiration for this lovely railway and, indeed, one of my locomotives spent a couple of seasons here.  What impresses me is not just that the 10-mile line has been re-created from a completely derelict trackbed entirely by volunteers, but that it continues to be run by unpaid staff.  Yet it is a big business with a £1m annual turnover. It also has, in my view, greater potential for development than almost any other heritage railway in the country.  This was once a double-track main line and there's no physical reason why a double track couldn't be reinstated again in the future.  It has the potential to extend not just to Broadway, but to Honeybourne and who knows? Maybe on towards Stratford too.  It has the potential to better integrate itself with the local transport infrastructure in the town of Cheltenham too. It is such a pity that the railway has been severed by the devastating embankment collapse. But I'm certain it will emerge all the stronger and I for one, will be very proud to be associated with this extraordinary railway's future development."

    No:2807 runs this weekend

    Worlds largest speeding ticket issued

An unfortunate Swedish motorist has been handed what is thought to be the largest speeding fine ever by Swiss Traffic Police Officers.

The 37 year old man has been given a £650,000 fine by Police when he was pulled over for driving at 186mph, when the speed limit on Swiss motorways is 74.5mph. This is believed to be the highest speed anyone has been caught driving in Switzerland.

In his defence the man claimed that:  'the car had recently been fitted with a new speedometer, which was faulty.' The reason for the large fine is because of the way speeding fines are calulated in Switzerland, which takes into account the earnings of the driver. This leaves the driver with 300 days of £2,163 daily fines, the highest possible penalty.

    Battery success for Johnsons'

Further to our news story on the 2nd of August - The trial of the electric Optare Solo on the Stratford park and ride service have been extremely successful. So much so that Johnsons' could soon be placing one of the Solo EVs into their fleet. The company says "that the electricity used in overnight charging of the Solo EV cost £7.30, while the cost of diesel to cover the same 65-mile duty cycle is estimated to be around five times greater at over £36."
They added “The Solo EV performed exceptionally well and we were satisfied and confident that electric buses can be put to use in our fleet. Drivers commented that they enjoyed the smooth drive, fast acceleration and gentle progressive braking. Passengers noticed that it was a more relaxed experience aboard the electric bus, with less vibration, a quieter environment and a smoother journey.”

During the trials the Solo EV covered around 65 miles a day. This was sufficient to meet the needs of the park-and-ride service with up to 13 round trips a day and yet the batteries still had around 20 per cent capacity in them. Permanent charging arrangements, particularly the ability to charge during layovers at the park-and-ride site, would enable that mileage to be increased significantly.

    Electric power in Stratford

Local Henley in Arden based bus and coach operator Johnsons are set to run trials of battery powered Optare Solos on their Straford Park and Ride service. During the trials the battery buses will be compared with their diesel powered cousins already in service on a number of important criteria including:

fuel consumption, emissions and running costs. On top of this social impacts will be monitored such as: the reactions of passengers, pedestrians, motorists and other road users, as well as local businesses and the drivers of the buses. This hopes to identify any significant differences in attitudes towards, the two types of propulsion.

The trial is being co-ordinated by sustainability consultants Greenwatt Technology and has been jointly funded by Stratford district council and Stratford Town Trust. At the end of last year Johnsons secured £280,000 from the government’s Green Bus Fund for the purchase of four low-carbon buses for the Stratford park-and-ride service.

    New identity for RASDV

    Important information regarding RASDV

    Hello there,

As you know RASDV has had a presence on the World Wide Web since 2006, since that time the site has gone from strength to strength. However earlier this year we decided that it was time for a change.

As of Wednesday 1st of September 2010 RASDV will be no more.

It will have changed into its new identiy: Totally Transport. Web address: www.totally-transport.co.uk But many things will stay the same, the content found here will be the same and continue to be improved, videos will continue to be uploaded under the same username on Youtube and photos will still be added to our same Fotopic gallery.

The changes to www.totally-transport.co.uk will take place slowly over the summer, the new name and brand identity will be phased in slowly over the summer and the changeover will hopefully be complete by the 1st September 2010. However our old web address for RASDV (which is http://rasdv.web.officelive.com) will continue to work and link you to this site. We do hope that you'll be patient with us as we work to improve your experience when you visit us.

Please Note: Our new web address (www.totally-transport.co.uk) is not currently live. You will recieve an update here when it works. Or you can keep checking the RASDV profile on National Preservation.

The argument centres around wether the FR will allow the Welsh Highland Heritage group to run trains on any of the line.

Really all enthusiasts want is for trains to run, we hope this clears up soon.

    Final design for 'Boris-masters' unveiled

These first pictures have been shown of how the new generation Routemasters (which have been nicknamed Boris masters after the London Mayor) is expected to look.

The new bus will be powered by eco-friendly hybrid technology. Transport for London claim that it will be 15 percent more fuel efficient than current hybrid buses and 40 percent more efficient than diesel double deckers. Quite how this is possible remains to be seen!

Lightweight materials help to keep emissions and fuel consumption down. TFL also reckons that the new model will be much quieter than any existing bus.

An open platform, reminiscent of the previous Routemaster, features on the new design and allows the reinstatement of a hop-on, hop-off service.

Boris Johnson, said: "This iconic new part of our transport system is not only beautiful, but also has a green heart beating beneath its stylish, swooshing exterior." The contract for building the new Routemaster has been awarded to Wrightbus.

    Steam enthusiast has narrow escape

A steam photographer has had a lucky escape after tresspassing on the line to get a photo of Britiania class 4-6-2 No:70013 'Oliver Cromwell' on a mainline special in Suffolk today.

The man failed to notice a commuter DMU service heading in the opposite direction and was almost hit by it.

The British Transport Police (BTP) have issued a safety message to railway enthusiasts and trainspotters following the incident.

BTP Inspector Ian Smart said: "The consequences of a human body impacting with a train travelling at this speed do not bear thinking about."

"Had this man been standing just a few inches closer to the track I am in no doubt that he would have either been killed or extremely badly injured."

"We're not out to spoil anyone's fun or enjoyment of what is part of our national heritage, but it is absolutely vital that people do not take risks that endanger their lives or the lives of others."

The worry is among enthusiasts is that the mindless few will spoil things for the majority of law abiding enthusiasts.

    Railway inspector approves viaduct

Her Majesties Railway Inspectorate has put the seal of approval on the GWSR's Stanway viaduct. This now allows public trains to run over the viaduct. This puts the 15-arch structure, the largest of its type on a UK heritage railway, firmly back on the railway map.  The last time passenger trains ran over the viaduct was in 1976, when the Honeybouirne Line was effectively closed following a freight train derailment at Winchcombe. The route was officially axed by British Railways in 1979.

The running line is now 11 miles, including Stanway, although to the south the line has been temporarily truncated at Gotherington because of a landslip. The first public trains are expected to run over the structure on May 29th with No:1450 and autocoach. Mainline rail fares quadruple

The Rail Passener Watchdog has claimed that some ticket prices have gone through the roof since the begining of the year.

Train companies say the number of people affected by such rises is relatively small. Since January, over 180 trains a week have been rescheduled as "peak-time", a BBC survey found. By redesignating trains as "peak", this allows train companies to increase fares without needing permission from the regulator.

Land Rover day at SVR 16th May.

Our readers may be interested to know about the Land Rover Day being held at the Severn Valley Railway on the 16th May.  Land Rovers will be on display at stations all along the line.

    What next after the slip?

In a press release the GWSR said: 'Our very capable properties director, Darren Fairley, is managing the investigation.  We've contracted engineers who are well known in the rail industry, and to our insurers, to carry out trial bores and surveys.  The full results aren't known yet, but it has shown that a large cavity has opened up within the embankment and over a much longer area than at first thought.  We think that there have been problems here through history, there's evidence of past repair work to the embankment in the form of rock baskets (gabions) in pace at the foot of the embankment.  The ground is naturally wet here while the geology on the Cotswold escarpment is a complex legacy of the Ice Age, which does produce ground movement.  It is likely that a combination of both has caused the problem, not helped by the exceptionally cold winter. What is important, though, is that the repair is carried out in a way that secures the embankment for good so that future generations can be confident that this won't happen again.  We are taking the best possible professional advice on modern (and efficient) techniques to stabilise the embankment, using experience gained with similar slips and geology elsewhere.'

It is also a possiblity that Autotrains will be running over Stanway viaduct during the GWR 175 celebrations May 29th - June 6th. To read more click on GWR 175th Celebrations.

Encouraging start to 2010 for GWSR

Inspite of the recent landslip beyond Gotherington the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway has enjoyed an good start to 2010 with a growth in ticket sales compared to the same two months last year.

At the end of April, 11,768 tickets had been issued, compared with 10,259 during March and April 2009.

Says Colin Dymock, head station master: "This year, the railway has operated over 29 running days to date, compared with 28 last year and the nearly 15 per cent increase in passengers is very good news. Ticket sales have also been boosted by the welcome return of Thomas the Tank Engine at the end of April, which attracted over 2,700 visitors.

Warning of 'no quick fix' for GWSR landslip

The chairman of the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway has warned that there will be no quick fix: "It's important that the extent of the problem is properly determined and an effective programme for remedial work put in place.  We'll share that information as soon as we can." However in the meantime new revised timetables are in operation and for the Blue and Red timetables, departures from Toddington, the railway's headquarters, are as advertised in the printed timetables but no trains are travelling beyond Gotherington until further notice. Each trip from Toddington offers a run straight through to Gotherington (via Winchcombe and the tunnel), return to Winchcombe; back to Gotherington and then back to Toddington again via Winchcombe.  This offers a longer journey time than in the normal timetable - and four trips through the tunnel!

On  Sundays May 9th and 23rd; June 27th; July 4th and 25th; August 8th and 22nd and September 5th and 19th a new purple timetable will be running.  However, for operational reasons and to accommodate the Sunday Lunch train, each public service makes just a single return trip to Gotherington.

Because there is not a running round loop at Gotherington , all normal services will be 'top and tailed'.  This means that a locomotive is attached to the train at each end.  In most cases this will be with a heritage diesel at one end and a steam locomotive at the other.  The end on which the steam locomotive is attached depends on which way the engine is pointing - for example, if the engine is pointing chimney-first towards the south, it will be attached at the south (Gotherington) end of the train.  The engine will haul the train to Gotherington, including the dead weight of the diesel, and the diesel hauls the train back again.

However, certain trains on the Red timetable have a steam locomotive attached at both ends of the train (marked with an 'S' on the timetable).

Malcom Temple added when asked about the railway's plans for their GWR 175 gala from May 31st - June 6th that: "Plans for our spectacular GWR175 event are going ahead and we will have 12 locomotives available for traffic and an intensive timetable. And as an added incentive, trains will, for the first time, be running over Stanway viaduct: the first step towards Broadway!"

    Shoreham Lifeboat bids farewell

The volunteer lifeboat crew at Shoreham Lifeboat station in Sussex have bid a fond farewell to the Lifeboat that during its 20 years in service has saved 458 lives at sea.

In the Lifeboat's  time at Shoreham, she has helped the crew in carrying out 414 launches, rescuing 458 people, 72 of which were evacuations in a medical emergency. Furthermore, the lifeboat enabled the crew to save the lives of 39 people who would likely have died were it not for the RNLI's involvement.

Named after a local dignitary and lifelong supporter of the RNLI the Hermione Lady Colwyn was the last Tyne class lifeboat ever built and was delivered to Shoreham on September 30th 1990 following a successful £250,000 fundraising appeal launched by the Shoreham [Gazette and] Herald in 1989.

As for her future? It is understood that, following overhaul and servicing, she will be decommissioned from the RNLI fleet before joining other Tyne class lifeboats that have been sold on to the Chinese search and rescue authorities. She will continue to spend the rest of her life saving ‘those in peril on the sea’ – a job she has proven herself so capable of, albeit on the other side of the world in the West Pacific and East China Seas.

RNLI Hermione Lady Colwyn is due to be replaced by a brand new Tamar class boat but until the new station is completed she has been temporarily replaced by another Tyne Class. To find out more about the Tamar class lifeboat you can click here

Redundant London bendies move to Brighton

Four of London General’s redundant Mercedes-Benz Citaro artics have been transferred to sister company Brighton & Hove. The buses are being used on one of the company’s busiest routes, serving Brighton’s universities.“We’re delighted to be introducing these buses into our fleet”, says Roger French, Brighton & Hove’s managing director. “They serve a particular niche market where we carry hundreds of students to the city’s two universities. It’s an extremely busy corridor and we need extra capacity. The artics will be absolutely ideal for this work.” He added"The buses will also operate on park-and-ride services for home games of Brighton & Hove Albion, who play at a football pitch with no nearby parking. “They’ll be ideal to move hundreds of football fans back to the remotely located car parks after the match." Before entering service in Brigton the vehicles had their centre doors removed and improved the arrangements at the front of the buses to include a wheelchair ramp. Overall capacity is now 147 passengers, with seats for 46 and space for 101 standees.

£7.8 Billion for new 'Boris masters'

Funds are set to be released for a new bus for London to be build by Wrightbus. The contract covers the cost of designing, building and testing the new hybrid model – and delivering five prototypes to London. TfL says that the price of subsequent vehicles would be broadly in line with that of existing hybrid double-deckers.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting (and transport minister in the outgoing government), says: “This is an extraordinary and wasteful amount to spend when fares are rising and important services like ticket offices are being cut. More than £1million on each bus, replacing completely serviceable buses just based on the design, is a poor choice of priorities.”Peter Hendy, London’s transport commissioner, defends the project: “TfL’s investment of £7.8million covers all research and development costs, prototypes, rigorous testing and five vehicles. We fully expect to have hundreds of these bespoke hybrid vehicles on our streets in years to come.

“Our original outlay is a sound investment, as we expect the final cost of the bus to be comparable with a standard double-deck hybrid.

“By the end of next year the first bus, which has been designed specifically for London, will hit the city’s streets. This is an exciting project to deliver a beautifully designed, environmentally friendly vehicle built for the capital.”

But it remains to be seen wether Boris can justify such a specialied design with budget cuts looming after next weeks general election.

    GWSR services supended

    GWSR closed by landslip

The Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway has been closed between Gotherington and Cheltenham because of a landslip on an enbankment near Gotherington.

Malcolm Temple, the railway's chairman, says: "The slip was discovered on 22nd April and although it does not directly affect the track over which trains run, as a precautionary safety measure we have decided to suspend all train services south of Gotherington.

"This means that no services will call at Cheltenham Racecourse station although trains will run as normal between Toddington and Gotherington Halt but to a revised timetable.

"Safety is of course, our number one priority.  We check our line every day before trains run and this is how movement of the embankment was noticed.  We have instructed specialist engineers to make trial bores in the land to determine the extent and cause of the problem and repairs will be carried out as soon as possible.

"It is of course too early to say when the line will be reopened or what the cost is likely to be."

All visitors to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway should travel to Toddington station where additional car parking will be available.

Malcolm continues: "The planned celebration of the 175th anniversary of the Great Western Railway between 29th May and 6th June will still go ahead with a spectacular star-studded cast of visiting locomotives.  As a bonus, trains will for the first time in nearly half a century, be travelling north from Toddington over the spectacular 15-arch, 50ft-high Stanway viaduct affording Festival visitors an impressive new spectacle!"

NRM gives green light to restoration of No:30120 T9

The National Railway Museum has given the go ahead to a plan to restore the 1899 built ex-London & South Western Railway T9 Class 4-4-0 locomotive No (30)120. No: 30120 is the only surviving locomotive from the T9 class who were given the nickname 'Greyhounds'. The locomotive is owned by the NRM but it is understood the engine will be based on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway in Cornwall.

The T9 will be returned to steam in British Railways lined black livery as No 30120, which is very much in keeping with the atmosphere of a 1950s Cornish branch line which the Bodmin & Wenford is striving hard to recreate, a perfect complement to the line’s BR carmine and cream Mark 1 coaches, and was the livery carried by the locomotive when it worked over "The Withered Arm" lines in North Cornwall in the early 1960s prior to withdrawal, and thus how many people will remember it.  It is currently anticipated that the locomotive and tender will be re-united at Bodmin by the early summer next year, whereupon a comprehensive programme of running-in and crew familiarisation will take place, prior to No 30120 making its full public debut at the Railway’s Steam Gala which will again be held in its traditional slot over the first weekend in September. Completion of the T9 will also mean that the Bodmin & Wenford will be home to no fewer than eight ‘appropriate’ Cornish steam locomotives.

South Devon Railway celebrates record 2009

Staff at the 7 mile long South Devon Railway have a reason to celebrate as 2009 ends. The figures showed 107,985 people had traveled on the railway, 8,394 of which were children under 5. The impressive figures show that the former Great Western Railway branch line is going from strength to strength and that the popularity of steam is certainly not waning. South Devon Railway Chairman Alan Taylor said: "We're all thrilled that 2009 has proven to be our best year ever with a record number of passengers and a truly memorable 40th anniversary season which saw ten different GWR engines running on the line.

2009 a bumper year for Gloucestershire and Warwickshire too!

2009 also ended with a bang on the G&WSR who recorded 73,836 tickets being sold until the 1st January 2010. This topped the railway's previous record in 2007 by 6,000 tickets, almost a 10% increase on 2008 sales. The railway's head station master Colin Dymock said:  "This is all the more encouraging becasue we operated over 156 days during the year - 10 fewer than 2008, which meant that on peak days some of our trains were very full.  For this reason we have added an extra coach to some trains." He added that Christmas, as always had been a great success: "Santa Specials have been once again very successful, just 37 tickets short of last year's record of 7,557.  I've been particularly encouraged by the way travellers have taken to the new online ticketing system which was put into use for the first time with the Santa Specials.  Online sales accounted for around 40 per cent of Santa tickets."

The Diesel running day was the best ever with 619 tickets sold while the Christmas Cracker attracted over 1,000 travellers despite some of the most atrocious weather imaginable.  Other highlights during the year were the Cotswold Festival of Steam with visting engine Olton Hall, masquerading as Harry Potter star locomotive Hogwarts Castle; the combined diesel gala and bus rally and hugely popular visits from Fireman Sam and Postman Pat.  The 50th Birthday celebrations for David Shepherd's locomotive Black Prince also brought fans of the artist and wildlife conservationist out in their hundreds.

2010 looks to be a fantasic year for the GWSR  with celebrations to mark the 175th Anniversary of the Great Western Railway, return of Thomas the Tank Engine, a re-visit from the locomotive that stars as Hogwarts Castle and the likely opening of the northern extension as far as Laverton.

2009 best year yet for West Somerset

2009 ended on a happy note for volunteers and staff and the West Somerset Railway as they were able to announce that the previous yearhad been the busiest in the 33 year history of the line. "We had already inched ahead of the previous record of 213,000 set in 2007 by the end of November" said WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare, "and our pre-Christmas festive trains such as the Santa ones were also very successful despite our passengers and workforce being confronted with some less than wonderful weather from the start of the second half of the month. The poor conditions continued also for our operations between December 27th and December 31st but we were still able to welcome a good number of travellers and visitors and overall our final total reached 226,737. Not only does that beat our 2008 record total by almost 23,000 but also means we are carrying 70,000 passengers per annum more that was the case a decade ago."
